Lyricist Javed Akhtar says Dhanush’s Kolaveri is meaningless

Noted Bollywood lyricist and one of the most-respected poet in the country, Javed Akhtar, has come down heavily on actor Dhanush’s latest hit song Why this Kolaveri… from his yet-to-be-released film 3. The song, penned and sung by the national-award winning actor, has become popular not only in Tamil Nadu but almost all over the country, with many FM radio stations based in Mumbai regularly playing the song.

Written by mixing Tamil words and English words ‘liberally’, the song has caught the imagination of the youths in a big way. The song is receiving record number of hits and getting downloaded on the Internet at regular intervals. The huge response to the song has made debutant director Aishwarya, who is directing her husband Dhanush and Shruti Haasan in 3, think of including her illustrious father in the song in a cameo appearance.

The song, when heard by the superstar for the first time, reportedly evoked a whole-hearted laughter from him. Condemning the ‘style’ in which the song has been penned, Akhtar has said that the song insults the sentiments of the viewers. Writing about the song on Twitter, Akhtar has said that the latest ‘national anthem’ of the youths appeared pedestrian at its best and sounded ‘irrelevant’.

“I just don’t understand as to what is in this particular song which makes the listeners go mad…Neither the tune is catchy nor the lyrics are worth-talking about…The success of this song belies all the name, fame and popularity I have managed to secure in the past many years. It’s a meaningless song sans any decipherable logic,” Akhtar has said.

Akhtar’s comments have met with an equal measure of appreciation and condemnation.
